Vision
Worldwide, deforestation is the second leading cause of increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide, therefore contributing to climate change and global warming.
Between 1990 and 2000, Lebanon was able to gain an average of 1,000 hectares of forest per year, leading to a reforestation rate of 0.83% per annum.
However between 2000 and 2005, these modest efforts decreased to 0.76% per annum. Additionally, other woodlands (non-forest wooded areas) have shown a decrease of 6000 hectares between the years 2000-2005 (see FAO and Montgabay).
Objectives
- To procure, distribute, plant, irrigate and maintain one million trees over a period of 10 years in Lebanon.
- Reach a survival rate of over 80%
- This is a mega project since the cost of procuring, planting, irrigating and maintaining is guesstimated at the price of approximately $6 per tree, hence the total cost of the project guesstimated at 6 million dollars.
- For this reason, we are starting with a reduced objective and we scale it up gradually: 15,000 trees for year 1, and 155,000 trees for year 10.
